The Waikato is New Zealand's longest river and runs north from Lake Taupo in the centre of the North Island to the sea. On the way it passes through a geothermal region, the New Zealand international rowing centre at Lake Karapiro where the 1978 and 2010 world championships were held and the city of Hamilton. At Ngaruawahia it passes by the Turangawaewae marae (meeting place) which is the centre of the Maori kingitanga movement.
